Eclipse was an incredibly sweet senior gelding, believed to be around 25 years old. He came to us in one of the most severe cases of neglect we have ever encountered. When the St. Louis Sheriff’s Department reached out to us, we knew we had to step in and help this gentle soul.

Upon arrival, Eclipse was emaciated and in need of urgent care. Working closely with our veterinarian, we followed the UC Davis Refeeding Protocol, a carefully monitored process designed to safely and gradually restore nutrients to his system.

In the days that followed, Eclipse faced serious challenges, including dehydration and a bout of impaction colic—a condition that can be life-threatening, particularly in a horse in his condition. Thanks to quick action, attentive care, and his resilient spirit, he began to improve. He received fluids, constant monitoring, and the loving support of everyone at the sanctuary.

Despite our best efforts, Eclipse’s body could not fully recover. The most compassionate choice was to let him go peacefully. He left this world surrounded by love, dignity, and gentleness.
